I was born and brought up in Lancashire. I left the north to attend Birmingham University to study for a BA Hons degree in Drama. Following this I worked for a “Theatre in Education” Company for a year on a school tour across the UK. It was this work that gave me an interest in Education and I decide that I wanted to train as a teacher. I started my teaching career at a large secondary school in Birmingham and became Head of Department. I then went on to become Head of Arts at a school in Dudley, followed by appointment to Assistant Head at Dormston. After one year at Dormston I became Deputy Head.
I still love Drama and enjoy my time in the classroom and staging the school productions. In the past I have directed ‘Chicago’, ‘Fame’ ‘Grease’ and ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’. I am also a regular theatre-goer myself and especially enjoy getting down to the West End!
I have travelled extensively and perhaps the most memorable trips were the times spent working on an American summer camp high in the Catskill Mountains of New Jersey, followed by touring the USA by Greyhound bus.
Originally from Staffordshire, I completed my degree in Chemistry and my PGCE at Kings College, London. I then worked for three years in Berkshire teaching Chemistry and Physics before relocating back to the Midlands. I took up a post at a Dudley School where I became Head of Science before moving onto Dormston in 2003 as Assistant Head Teacher. My move to Deputy Head occurred the following year.
I am married and have two children – a boy and a girl who keep me incredibly busy with their own individual pursuits!
In my spare time I enjoy travelling with my wife and children. I am also a keen fan of Rugby Union and try to get to as many matches as I can.
Born and raised in the Black Country I graduated from the University of Wolverhampton with a First Class Honors Degree in Dance and Education Studies. Having a keen interest in dance from an early age I continued to study for my associate teaching examinations with the National Association of Teachers of Dancing before completing a PGCE at Liverpool.
Having worked at Dormston School for many years now I am proud to be part of such a dynamic and innovative leadership team. 20 years of teaching and I continue to thrive on educating and shaping the lives of young people in the hope they will achieve their wildest dreams!
I am a devoted mother of two gorgeous girls who never cease to amaze me with their love of life and inquisitive nature.
My main passions outside of school, besides my family, are astronomy and travelling. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to experience and explore many parts of the world including the Inca Trail in Peru, becoming an advanced SCUBA diver in Thailand, supporting the All Blacks in New Zealand and topping up my tan on many an Indonesian island!
As a second generation immigrant who was brought up in the seventies I am a firm believer in the importance of equal opportunities for all and that everyone should have the chance to achieve their full potential, whatever their background. My experiences of schooling, both in London and then the Midlands has shaped these beliefs considerably. I was the first person in my extended family to go onto University and complete a degree which is something that I am very proud of.
I have taught in a number of schools, all in the Midlands. Previous roles have included: Head of Year, Head of R.E. and Citizenship Co-ordinator. As Assistant Headteacher at Dormston School I have had the privilege of leading in both the pastoral and curriculum areas of the school, as well as leading initiatives such as whole school literacy, numeracy and Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance.
I am a parent of twin daughters and a son. My girls are currently studying for their first degrees: Sian is reading Psychology at Sheffield and Kieram is reading English at Reading. Krishan, my son is currently in Year 10 and completing the first year of his GCSEs. I am an incredibly proud mother but as a parent, do recognise the trials and tribulations of parenthood.
In my free time I particularly enjoy swimming, walking and yoga. Living in Worcester I am surrounded by the most beautiful countryside and do try to get out and about whenever possible.
Born and Raised in South East London I have played sport all my life. Representing my District and County in 4 different activities. Eventually I had to choose one and from the age of 14 decided to play football to the highest standard my talent allowed. I moved to the Midlands for University to study Sport and Media Studies and due to football commitments and marrying and settling down I have never gone back to London. I was given a temporary 3 month contract at Dormston School in September 1998 and have been here ever since.
During my time here I have seen many changes and have undertaken many roles. From Head of Year 8 to School’s Sports Co-ordinator. Most recently I filled the post of Head of Derwent House and I am now relishing the challenge of supporting the other SLT and staff to continue to move the school forward. My aim is to allow teachers to teach and pupils to learn by supporting staff in a variety of ways. Outside of school I am still involved in Semi-professional football as an assistant manager and I like to chill out watching sport on the TV.
Growing up I was a sport fanatic and I ended my education completing a degree in Sports Science and Mathematics at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.
After a year of working as a supply teacher in a huge variety of schools my first permanent appointment was as a PE and Mathematics teacher at Dormston in September 1996. I have been here ever since and worked in a variety of different roles, Head of Year, Head of Mathematics and finally Assistant Head Teacher with my main responsibilities being tracking pupil progress and data analysis. I also write the school timetable.
Teaching at Dormston for over 20 years means that I have seen enormous changes over the years and I am often teaching the children of some of my former pupils. The phrase “Sir, I think you taught my mum” is becoming increasingly common… which I can never quite come to terms with!
After completing my degree at Plymouth University in Political Science and Languages, I moved to London and worked for British Airways as Cabin Crew. This was an amazing experience for me at the age of 21; travelling the world, using my language skills and meeting new people. Following this, whilst living in Twickenham I joined Reed Recruitment as a Recruitment Consultant for three years. For me, this was a turning point as it was during this time that I knew I had to find a career that would fully exploit my love of languages.
I started my teaching career at a Wolverhampton School where I completed the Graduate Teaching Programme and within a couple of years I was promoted to Head of French. Following 8 years there, I moved to Dormston to become Head of Year 7 and then on to Head of House. Then, in March 2020, during our first national lock-down, I became Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning.
My hobbies include reading, playing piano and running (although with two kids, two cats and two dogs it can be a challenge to find the time!).
I was born in Sedgley and lived here until I was 30. I studied at High Arcal School but married a Dormston alumni. Since graduating from the University of Nottingham I have worked in schools in Wolverhampton, Dudley and Sandwell but started teaching at Dormston in 2000 and felt like I had come home. I came to the school as Head of Year but then became Head of English. I received accredited Advanced Skills Teacher status in 2008 and spent a two year secondment as English Advisor for the local authority which involved me working on school improvement in several schools across the Black Country. I now have the role of Lead Practitioner at Dormston.
When I am not reading about Teaching and Learning I attend to the sheep, guinea fowl, ducks and chickens and dogs – all rescue – that I have on my farm. Luckily I have help from my three children – one of whom has recently started University in Birmingham, one who is studying for A levels and another who has just started her secondary journey. I am also Vice Chair of Governors at a local primary school.
When students at Dormston ask me about my job I tell them it’s a pleasure and a privilege to serve the community I was raised in and I cannot think of a better way to spend my working time than with young people who amaze me, question me, make me smile and teach me things every day.
